THE VIRTUAL TOUR ...CONTINUED
| This concludes our first virtual tour of the Stewart Mine. We hope that you have enjoyed the tour! Please return from time to time as we will be adding a lot more of the secret world of the Stewart, including progress reports as we open up the new lens. Right now, we're all going to get back to work mixing concrete and putting up steel I-beams. Please be sure to leave your hardhats and lights over in the equipment shed, and fill out our comment form below. | |

ELVIS LIVES! We call our Case 350 loader "Elvis" because he shakes, rattles and rolls and, though rumored to be dead on more than one occasion, has been resurrected more times than the number of reported sitings of the real Elvis since his passing. LONG LIVE ELVIS! |
| This is the magic valley of the San Luis Rey River that runs through Pala towards Carlsbad, 30 miles downstream. Pala means "shovel" in Spanish and Pal means "water" in the Indian language. This valley once had 77 operational gem mines but now only three or four. It is now home to a mixed community of hispanic, anglo and Indian neighbors. We all get along real well in this valley because we always have our neigbors to count on (or blame if we have to). The real gem of Pala is the old spiritual legacy found at the Mission San Luis Rey which is now open to the public and worth a visit in its own right. The local tribe of Cupeno and Luiseno Indians also hold dances and other events that make a visit to this valley a rich and beautiful experience. | ![]() |
On Tuesday August 18, 1998 visitors from the Russian Acadamy of Science sponsored by Utah Mineral and Fossil, GAMECO and Mineral Market toured the mine. Photos of the mine tour can be viewed by clicking here.
